What to know about the Florida hospital where a gunman killed two staff members in April 2016

FLORIDA — The state’s largest hospital was closed on April 11 after a gunman with an AR-15 assault rifle opened fire inside the hospital.

The gunman, who died of his wounds, was identified as Michael L. Johnson, 48, a father of two who had worked as a hospital security guard.

The hospital’s emergency management director said Johnson was in critical condition when he arrived at the hospital’s Orlando headquarters.

In a statement, the Florida Department of Health and Human Services said Johnson worked for the hospital since 2007 and had been a member of its security team for more than 20 years.

The agency said the hospital was “in the midst of a significant increase in our patient population due to increased health care utilization and the continued impact of the pandemic.”

An investigation into the shooting found no evidence that Johnson had been the intended target of the attack.
